WE CAN’T OPEN OUR WINDOWS, SUNBATHE OR HAVE A BBQ ON THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR AS WE LIVE IN ‘UK’S SMELLIEST VILLAGE’

HOT and bothered residents in the UK’s “smelliest village” say unlike the rest of Britain – they won’t be enjoying the sun today.

As the mercury rockets to a sweltering 35C as the hottest day of the year rolls in – poor folk in North Staffordshire will be trapped indoors.

Residents living near the controversial Walleys Quarry landfill in Silverdale claim it’s not even possible to open a window day and night thanks to the “eggy” stench wafting up from the dumping ground.

And despite the 29C forecast in Silverdale today, sunbathing and barbeques will also be off the menu thanks to the pong which has blighted people’s lives for years.

The foul smell – made worse in the heat – also brings swarms of flies on hot days making life completely unbearable.

Builder Ashley Hawe has lived within half a mile of Walleys Quarry for six smelly years.

He says he gets “fobbed off” when he’s complained about the smell to Red Industries, who manage the stinking pit.

He moaned: “It’s going to be terrible. They keep saying it’s getting better but it isn’t getting better, it’s getting worse.

“And why would you want to go outside when you can see that mountain of waste? When it’s sunny we have to go somewhere else.”

Donna Lovatt, who lives within a mile of the quarry, says the smell is like “excrement” and leaves her feeling “sick.”

She added: “We know the warm weather is coming and we can’t enjoy it.

“The smell is that bad it stinks like excrement. It can be really horrendous, it makes you feel sick.

“When the weather’s hot we have to shut the windows because of all the flies, it’s terrible.”

Despite efforts to grin and bear the smell, Donna said she has to cut-short garden activities as the stench is overwhelming.

Peter Malam also lives a short distance from the quarry – which was converted into a landfill in 2007.

He said: “I think it just destroys your smell. My smell isn’t like it was when I was 40.

“We even had a bloke up here, he was a gas engineer, he was walking up and down the road, he said it smells like a gas leak. I told him ‘it’s the quarry’.”

The stinky situation over the years has sparked a wave of protests and campaigns by residents’ groups who demand change.

A group called Stop The Stink have lobbied for years to end the smelly misery – but to no avail.

The group were banned from protesting outside a quarry following a temporary order brought by owners Red Industries.

This is despite the landfill sparking major health concerns from residents – with one mum saying her son has been left “struggling to breathe”.

Rebecca Currie, 41, claims the pungent smokes are shortening five-year-old Matthew’s life.

And she insists her prematurely born child who has chronic lung disease is suffering unnecessarily thanks to the smell.

Another mum, Suzi Stringer, who lives just 100 meters from the landfill, says her family have been plagued by nose bleeds from the “noxious” site.

In a statement, Walleys Quarry said: “As the Environment Agency’s own reporting data shows, emissions levels have reduced significantly due to ongoing efforts made by Walleys Quarry Ltd.

“Emissions are at a very low level the vast majority of the time.”

The Sun Online has approached Red Industries for comment.
