Tim James wins Liberal preselection for former Gladys Berejiklian seat

Ms Berejiklian won the seat by a 71-29 preferential margin against Labor in 2019.

In a statement Thursday night, Mr James admitted he had big shoes to fill.

“For almost two decades Willoughby has had an exceptional local representative in Gladys Berejiklian and I will look to continue her work,” he said.

“I will make special efforts to ensure that our roads and infrastructure are able to meet the needs of this community, and we help preserve and enhance our local public space. “

Ms Berejiklian tendered her resignation as a Member of Parliament for New South Wales earlier this month.

She resigned as prime minister in October last year after the Corruption Commission revealed it was investigating whether she violated public trust or encouraged corrupt behavior during her secret relationship with disgraced former MP Daryl Maguire.

By-elections in the Willoughby, Monaro, Bega and Strathfield seats were originally scheduled for February 12, but a March date is also currently being considered by the NSW President’s office.

Questions surrounding the February date include whether the Election Commission will be able to provide an alternative to in-person voting and whether Ivote can be used.

If no in-person voting alternative can be found for February 12, it is understood that another date in March will be selected.

The New South Wales president spoke to the main parties this week, briefing them on the ongoing process to determine the date for the by-elections.

While the president’s office will consider input from major parties, the final decision will be made for reasons of public interest.
