The onus will be on China to ‘do the heavy lifting’ in improving relationship

There are signs there will be some sort of “normalisation” in the relationship between China and Australia, according to James Bowen who is a Policy Fellow at the Perth USAsia Centre.

Defense Minister Richard Marles recently held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart on the sideline of a security summit in Singapore – leading to suggestions a reset in diplomatic relations between the two nations may arise.

Mr Bowen said despite the recent meeting, it is still “early days” on the issue.

“And I think that the Albanese government has been unwilling to say that it’s going to make any sort of concessions to China around improving the relationship,” Mr Bowen said.

“So, the onus will be on China to actually do the heavy lifting in improving the relationship.”
