“The Matrix Resurrections” would have continued without Lana Wachowski – deadline

If you have watched The Matrix Resurrection, you might remember a scene where the character of Smith (played by Jonathan Groff) goes after Warner Bros., possibly leaving Lana and Lilly Wachowski (the creators of The matrix franchise) behind to lead another Matrix movie. Well, it turns out it’s not just hyperbole.

In a recent interview with Collider, Resurrections producer James McTeigue admits that WB intended to assign another director. McTeigue has worked on all the Matrix movies and said the “money making ability” of a fourth Matrix movie meant there was “always talk”. However, when Lana Wachowski jumped at the chance to direct, the studio quickly said yes, it made sense to have the original director on board.

“See. I think when you have a franchise with such a potential money-making ability, there’s always talk. It’s the same way the Marvel Universe repeats itself and folds in on itself- even, where you have Spider Man, Where you have Iron Man, Where Thor”Said McTeigue. “There is always a potential to update these movies just because of the ability to make money and tell new stories. I shouldn’t say it’s just a purely fiscal thought. But yeah, look, there were versions there, but they hadn’t landed on the correct version. So when Lana finally came back and said, “Look. I’m interested in making another movie ”, of course they went with the filmmaker who was behind the Matrix.

Since the release of Matrix resurrections in theaters and on HBO Max, the reception from critics and fans has been mixed. Despite this, WB wants to keep the franchise going with a fifth film and wants Lana Wachowski to return, as studio CEO Ann Sarnoff has confirmed.

Matrix resurrections stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff.
