Team news Aston Villa vs Manchester United LIVE as Bruno Fernandes scores after Martinez blunder

Manchester United return to the Premier League on Saturday night when they take on Aston Villa, kicking off at 17:30 GMT.

United started the week with a win against the same opponents but know they will have to put in a much better performance if they are to come away with three points this weekend.

Ralf Rangnick’s side will be looking to bounce back from their league loss to Wolves two weeks ago and head into the game backed by an incredible record at Villa Park. United are unbeaten in their last 22 league away matches against Villa, the longest run without a win that a team has had against another in English Football League history.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford are not in the squad while Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay miss the game through suspension. Young Anthony Elanga starts.

Villa finally entered the contest

A few corners gave Villa momentum in the final five minutes and they finally entered the competition. United must be regretting not scoring a second goal as it now looks like they could do so with the half-time whistle. Cavani was dying with death there in his own region and the fact that he is back there shows how suddenly United are under the hammer. Fred, excellent for 35 minutes, has inexplicably tried to endanger a spectator.

Salute, De Gea

wow.

What a save from De Gea.

De Gea makes his first save

A little over half an hour and this is David de Gea’s first stop. He has rarely been so quiet in games this season. United have been excellent so far, they pressed when Villa won the ball but they quickly got back into shape and defensively that form has been good. The gaps between the lines are quite tight and Villa players can’t find any place to play through United. Any extended period of possession simply ends with the ball at the feet of a United player. The 4-3-3 has a lot of positives so far.

McTominay’s absence could be a blessing in disguise

United are taking advantage of not having McTominay next to Fred. Their instinct is to push forward and complete the attack or make an impact in the final third. Tonight Matic holds the fort and allows Fred to press Villa without United getting caught on the counterattack. The balance between defense and attack has been so much better and Fernandes drifting to the left is causing all sorts of problems for Villa on that side, where Elanga’s pace is also slowing them down.

This is the best display under Ranknick to date

At this rate, there’s going to be a tedious “are United better than Ronaldo?” debate. It was the best performance under Rangnick so far. There are only 25 minutes left at the time of writing and United need to increase their advantage. The intention has been great so far and they are as bright as the spotlight. Villa look so discouraged and the crowd is chafing at their shortcomings and the refereeing.

United fans have treated this ground as their second home for the past two decades. So far, it’s been an overdue mood picker.

It’s a brilliant performance away from home…

It’s been a brilliant away performance so far for United. They attack with intention and determination when on the ball and they look solid when off the ball. David de Gea has not yet been asked and how many times have you been able to say so this season? Not a lot. It was a strong response after an unconvincing win on Monday.

Elanga proves her worth

Elanga launched into an energetic run down the left just there. His pace is an asset.

It was superb from Greenwood

Greenwood single-handedly led United onto the pitch.

United are on top.

Almost from Greenwood – great backup.

United defend well

United have been tough to break and their form is impressive,

Villa still to threaten

There are 15 minutes left and Villa is not yet threatened.

They are looking at a different side than who played earlier this week.

It’s been brilliant from United

It was a deliberate start from United, who started with the front foot before Martinez dropped a cart. United control the game impressively, the fans have a fabulous voice and they regularly threaten Villa. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of luck to lift your spirits and Martinez did that. He concedes far too many weak goals and it was disconcerting how many Arsenal fans lamented his sale. Again, these are Arsenal fans.

LUCK!

Almost from Elanga at the back post.

It could be the same as Monday…

United started well on Monday night but started to lose control.

They must be looking for another objective here.

7′ – AVL 0-1 MUNTyrone Marshall

It was a gift from Martinez

United had started pretty well and they will take that gift from Martinez. It’s more like a United 4-3-3 and it means Fernandes is drifting to the left of midfield and he’s linked well with Telles so far. It was Telles who delicately delivered the free kick to Fernandes, allowing him to advance, but it was a howl from Martinez. The kind of break United need right now.

Villa have a poor home record to overcome

Villa are winless in their last 22 home league games against United (D7 L15) since a 3-1 win in August 1995. It is the longest home run without a win a team has had against another in the league. history of the English Football League.

A first goal for United today?

United scored the first goal in 33 Premier League games against Aston Villa.

They have won 32 games and drawn one. This is the most a team has opened the scoring without losing to a team in the history of the competition.

THE IMPORTANT EVENT

Why Ronaldo isn’t in the United vs Villa squad

Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo is currently sidelined with a hip flexor injury.

Ronaldo missed victory over Villa in the FA Cup on Monday night but had trained this week ahead of the trip to Villa Park.

The German, speaking ahead of that match, however, revealed that Ronaldo couldn’t train on Friday ahead of Saturday’s game.

“With Cristiano it’s unfortunate, it’s always the same problem with his hip flexor,” Rangnick told MUTV.

“He couldn’t train yesterday [Friday] and I had a chat with him before and after practice.”

Greenwood has excelled in this field

Greenwood has excelled at this ground in recent seasons, overtaking Pepe Reina and leaving Tyrone Mings for dead in last season’s 3-1 win. United are a better attacking side with Greenwood, but their season so far peaked in August.

United fans serenade Edinson Cavani again and a Uruguayan flag has been unfurled on the second tier of the Doug Ellis stand. Like Greenwood, Cavani was on the scoresheet here last season, nodding after a measured cross from Marcus Rashford.

Rangnick’s quotes about Maguire are interesting

Rangnick’s quote in one of his pre-match interviews about Maguire ‘having no more problems’ but wanting to stick with the two centre-backs from the FA Cup tie makes the captain seem abandoned on this subject. Obviously, he’s been missing for a few weeks, but Rangnick didn’t offer that as an explanation. Maguire hasn’t been in great shape, or even good form, this season, but it’s still a bold move to leave an £80million centre-back on the bench. It’s one of Rangnick’s most decisive calls.

Harry Maguire.

Van de Beek was always going to be on the bench

It was on this pitch that Anthony Elanga got his first first-team exposure for United almost 18 months ago in a friendly behind closed doors. It was also the day Donny van de Beek made his first United start. Surprisingly, it’s the Swedish teenager making his first league debut this season and not the £40m Netherlands international who was seconds away from a Champions League final.

This Instagram post from the United Instagram account about Van de Beek ‘bringing the sauce’ to Villa Park was cringe-inducing and you knew he wouldn’t be in the XI today.
