‘Scream’ Star Sonia Ammar Breaks Down Her Entire Fitness Routine

  • Sonia Ammar, 22, made her film debut in Scream today.
  • The model-turned-actress sat down with women’s health to talk about all things fitness and mental health.
  • Sonia says her fitness routine is constantly changing. “I try to make it fun and do something different every day,” she explains.

Sonia Ammar may only be 22, but she is already embarking on her second career. After years of modeling, her main role in the film Scream marks his official transition to acting.

Sonia says the change was exciting (she’s always had a passion for acting), but unexpected. “You never have an order for things that are going to happen,” she says Women’s health.

But with her big, new role came unexpected challenges, like a complete overhaul of her relationship with exercise. “When I was younger, I thought exercise was only for physical reasons, to lose weight, to stay fit or strong,” Sonia shares. “And now I’ve completely changed my outlook on health. I move to feel good mentally.”

Here’s how Sonia built a flexible fitness routine that makes her happy from the start:

    Sonia often changes her workouts.

“I think you really have to alternate and try different things,” says Sonia women’s health, “and that’s why I try to make it fun and do something different every day.”

Pilates classes are one of his favorite ways to sweat it out. She says machines, like the Reformer and the Chair, help her tone her entire body. On other days, she turns to dumbbells and resistance bands for a full-body workout.

Even the time she spends exercising changes. Sometimes it’s an hour of interval training or a long hike, while other days she can move her body for a quick 20 minutes. This baseline “really had an impact on my mental health,” adds Sonia.

On the food side, Sonia is a fan of intermittent fasting.

During filming Scream, Sonia noticed that her eating habits were starting to change. “I found that I wasn’t very disciplined with my food,” she says. Between eating whatever was available on the set (at all times of the day) and “drinking way too much coffee,” she wasn’t feeling her best.

She has since given up coffee altogether and now sticks to a flexible intermittent fasting schedule.

She starts eating every day around noon, then eats a meal whenever she feels hungry thereafter. “I’m always looking for that balance,” she adds. “I don’t think I’ve found the perfect strategy.” Sonia also says she will cook breakfast if she wakes up very hungry. It’s about “listening to my body and what I need”.

And, she is working on her skills in the kitchen. “I’m the worst cook,” admits Sonia. “I love food and I love eating out, but I’ve definitely been hampered by my cooking skills.”

So she challenges herself to cook dinner at least twice a week. Usually, she prepares a plate of marinated chicken with rice and vegetables, such as sweet potatoes or zucchini (yum!).

And, she worked hard to improve her mental health.

First thing to do: Sonia wakes up using an alarm clock, not her phone. Then she meditates for five to ten minutes. This brief morning routine helps Sonia start the day off right.

Throughout the day, Sonia likes to set aside time to read, watch TED talks or go for walks.

Prioritizing her mental health is new for Sonia, but she says it has made a huge difference. She’s honest about her past experiences as a model: The industry often made her feel objectified, as the focus was on her body.

Now that she’s moved on to acting, she’s focusing on her own health by revamping her daily routines. The result? “I think the best thing I’ve achieved for myself is that accepting your body and accepting how you look” is key, “but the most important thing is correcting the way you feel,” she says.

Say it louder for the people in the back!
