Rare disc of ice forms on the Maine River, attracting onlookers again

A disc of ice has formed on the surface of a Maine river, attracting onlookers.

The spinning disk of ice first caught the eye in January 2019 when it formed on the same river, the Presumpscot at Westbrook. A partial iteration of the disc was reviewed in 2020.

The disc began to form again on Tuesday, attract locals and tourists.

A disk of ice forms when the ice is shaped and moved by the current and the vortex below, turning it and shaping it into a circle.

We can’t help but be thrilled with the return of the famous Westbrook Ice Disc! ยป the town of Westbrook writes on facebook. “Let’s enjoy it while it’s here in our town.”
