Pitt County School Board votes to reinstate mask mandate, discuss books awarded to middle school students

PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) – The Pitt County School Board voted 6-2 in favor of reinstating his mask tenure, effective Tuesday, Jan.4.

Pitt County Public Health Director Dr John Silvernail has recommended that the school board adopt the mask mandate.

The distribution of certain books to students in the school district was also discussed at the council meeting.

In recent days, some parents of students at Ayden Middle School have criticized teachers and administrators for attributing the book All american boys to students. Parents are upset because the book contains profanity and themes that they feel are unsuitable for students as young as college age.

School board member Benjie Forrest also objected to the book being awarded due to the profanity it contains.

It was clarified during the meeting that the book cannot be collected from the school library; only the teacher had access to it.

Meredith Hill, media specialist for Pitt County Schools, noted that the teacher made it clear that any students who did not feel comfortable reading the book could be assigned another book, in which case , Darkness before dawn. Forged by fire is another book that some parents have objected to their children reading without their supervision.

However, some parents were also unhappy with the book because they said it contained themes of suicide, pedophilia, rape, and drug use, which they felt were too mature for college kids.

Hill said that while some students may not be familiar with themes like these, others are, and which teacher chooses All american boys for homework was a way of involving pupils who could not read.

She added that labeling books involving mature issues as objectionable could be seen as labeling as students treat these issues as reprehensible.

The school board has decided to hold a special meeting on Monday, Jan. 17 to make a final decision on the use of the books in Pitt County schools. The meeting will be open to the public.
