NSW Police investigate suspicious death of homeless man from inner west

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a “well-known” man in Sydney’s inner west earlier this week after he sustained facial injuries.

Emergency services were called to Hardie Avenue, Summer Hill, about 6.30am on Monday following a concern for welfare report.

Vincenzo Leonello, 72, was helped by a member of the public before police arrived and started CPR. He died at the scene.

Police have established Strike Force Ratsu to investigate Mr Leonello’s death and an autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death.

Detective Inspector Claudia Allcroft said Mr Leonello was homeless at the time of his death but he had been living in the area for “quite some time”.

She said he had sustained facial injuries before he died.

“Following further inquires, we believe there is someone in the community who knows about Mr Leonello’s death and we’re urging anyone who has information to come forward,” Detective Inspector Allcroft told 2GB.

“It is a tragic event … I’m told he is well known in the community and he is a much-loved family member.”
