Lee Bowyer claims Manchester United transfer as Teden Mengi prepares for Birmingham City debut

Lee Bowyer could offer Manchester United youngster Teden Mengi his debut in this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Plymouth Argyle.

Earlier this week, the 19-year-old became the first signing in the Birmingham City transfer window when he agreed to come on loan for the remainder of the season.

The deal has been ratified by the Football Association and Mengi is set to make his first appearance – both for the Blues and in the FA Cup.

It’s a signing that Bowyer liked – and one based on the Blues’ positive relationship with the Old Trafford lineup.

“Teden has had loan experience before, he’s fast and powerful,” Bowyer said. “He’s not bad with the ball, he wants to defend and is good at recovering.

“He’s going to have to adjust his defense slightly because I’m asking them to defend in a different way but I think it’s a good signing and a positive one.

“To get someone with their experience through the door as quickly as we did, [I have] I have to thank those above for doing their part.

The Blues’ ability to get Mengi into the transfer window so early was aided by the way they worked with Tahith Chong – the attacking midfielder who had done so well before the injury that ruled him out for at least four months.

“That’s what we want to try to do, I’ve done it in the past, try to build relationships with the clubs,” Bowyer said. “What we did with Chong until he got injured, Man United were delighted with his progress.

“If we can continue to do that with the players who are loaned to us, it can only work well for us in the future, if and when we have to use any of their players.”

“They know they are going to get their player back better than the player who arrived – that’s always something I’ve been able to do.”

Manchester-born Mengi made two senior appearances for United, the most recent in last month’s Champions League draw with Young Boys, when he stepped off the bench to replace Luke Shaw.
