Now CCTV and body camera clips from the moments before, during and after the attack have been released by Greater Manchester Police.
The first shows Chevelleau buying his gun from a store in Blackley.
He can be seen entering the store around 10.40am on the morning of the attack, before appearing to look at what different knives were available for purchase.
The clip then shows him buying the offending weapon at the counter – a £1.50 knife.
CCTV footage then captures Chevelleau boarding a bus to Shudehill before driving to central Arndale.
He is captured walking towards the restroom inside, where he got rid of the knife wrapping.
Footage then shows Chevelleau heading towards the main shopping center in Arndale where he carried out his horrific attack.
After stabbing his victims, he is seen running around the mall before throwing the weapon in a bin at the bottom of Arndale Steps.
Buyers can be seen watching him as he runs away.
They were later captured exiting the mall exits in terror.
Some were captured pushing prams as they exited the Arndale to safety.
Chevelleau was then quickly apprehended by nearby officers and footage showed him raising his hands for officers as he sat on the ground in the street.
He is then told to roll over on his chest while handcuffs are placed on him, then police body camera footage shows him being put into a van following his arrest.
Prosecutor Andrew Ford QC told the court on Friday: “All of these offenses were committed on Friday 11 October 2019.
“Mr Chevelleau, who is now 41, lived alone in a flat on Rochdale Road in Blackley.
“At 10.40am he walked into the pound near his home and bought a knife for £1.50.
“The shopkeeper described it as calm but as he left the shop the accused ran.
“He hid the knife in his coat and got on the bus and arrived downtown just after 11 p.m.
“He entered the Arndale and then entered a private area to change the babies.
“A wrap from a knife was found in a bin. It left the baby changing area and looped around the Arndale Centre.
“He burst into a run brandishing the knife and randomly stabbed five members of the public.”
The court heard how, upon his arrest, Chevelleau told officers, “Arrest me, you white trash can.”
“He kept saying, ‘I’m doing this for my people. It’s political. I don’t like black people, I don’t like white people, I don’t like Asian people.’
“When he was at the police station he said, ‘I was going to stab my ex-girlfriend but I couldn’t bother traveling so I attacked someone in town. I’m guilty as a sin .’
