Family face jail time after deadly exorcism ritual

Members of a family in the Turkish capital are facing murder charges in a case involving a deadly exorcism ritual.

Özge Nur Tekin, 30, died last year after being taken to hospital after suddenly fainting. However, doctors alerted security forces when they discovered bruises on the victim’s back and arms.

An inquest revealed that Tekin died after a ritual exorcism of a jinn, a supernatural creature interpreted as an evil spirit in Islamic theology. Six defendants, including the victim’s husband, Selçuk Tekin, and his parents, were arrested.

Selçuk Tekin said his wife suffered from psychological problems and was told by family members that she might be “hurt by a jinn”.

Later, Selçuk Tekin sought help from a man living in the central Anatolian province of Kayseri who introduced himself as an exorcist.

“The guy told me to sacrifice an animal and later he hit her [the victim] back slightly 100 times with a stick. He also asked me to give him cupping therapy,” Tekin said, adding that his wife was sleeping peacefully after all, but suddenly passed out when she woke up.

Prosecutors are seeking prison sentences of between 12 and 18 years for the defendants after a forensic report found the victim died of internal bleeding due to ‘soft tissue trauma’, confirming beating allegations .

Released on bail, the suspects are expected to appear in court in the coming days.
