The family of an 18-year-old man who died in a downtown Boxing Day crash say Toronto needs safer streets.
Kean McKenzie was one of eight people injured in a crash involving two vehicles on Yonge Street and Richmond Street West on December 26, 2021 at around 2 p.m., according to a statement released by his family on Monday. He died of his injuries in hospital on New Years Day.
Kean and his brother, Dylan, and his father, Sean, all pedestrians, were injured after the two vehicles collided and one rolled onto its side on a sidewalk, hitting a crowd of people. A GoFundMe page identified the father and his two sons and said all three were waiting for a crossing signal on a street corner when they were hit.
Kean and Dylan sustained serious injuries and both were transported in life-threatening condition to hospital, where Dylan remains in serious condition, according to the page. Sean sustained a head injury and a broken collarbone and was released from the hospital.
“RIP Kean, our sweet angel,” the family says on the page.
In the statement emailed to CBC News, the family said they were “deeply saddened” by Kean’s death.
“We mourn not only the loss of a wonderful young man, dejected in the prime of his life, but the many contributions he would have made to this world with his kindness, generous spirit and intelligence,” said the family.
“He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends who share our disbelief that something so tragic has happened,” the family continued.
“We hope that the senseless way in which her life was taken from us will strengthen the resolve of those in our justice system who are determined to ensure that all victims receive real justice, and that it reminds us that we have a a long way to go to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in our cities. ”
Toronto Police said their traffic officers were continuing to investigate.
Police say the crash happened when a 32-year-old man, driving a white Hyundai heading west in the middle lane, turned left into a 22-year-old man’s path, driving a silver Kia also heading west in the left lane. The two vehicles collided, causing the Kia to roll onto its side and colliding with several pedestrians.
Police urged residents, businesses and drivers, who may have security camera or dashboard footage of the area or crash, to come forward.
