You don’t have to permanently say goodbye to alcohol (unless your doctor recommends it), but limiting your intake can go a long way in helping your health in your 50s.

“Alcohol comes with many empty calories (with no nutritional value) that increase your risk of becoming overweight while depriving you of certain water-soluble vitamins like B-complex vitamins and vitamin C,” says Roxanne Bakker, RD with Vitl .

Not only that, but too much alcohol can harm your liver as well, which can lead to other health issues as well.

“Drinking alcohol can increase your risk of developing liver disease, especially if you take prescription drugs. It is therefore essential to manage your alcohol consumption to ensure that you do not overload your liver with toxins to process and cleanse from your body, ”says Bakker. .

Drinks with tons of added sugar can contribute to weight gain and make it harder to try and get a lean body after age 50.

“Drinks with excess sugar cause blood sugar spikes and can contribute to unnecessary hunger pangs,” says Morgyn Clair, MS, RDN, author of Fit Healthy Momma.

Sugary drinks like soda are among the worst for weight gain, according to the Harvard School of Public Health, because they don’t fill you up like solid foods and have no nutritional value. So if you are trying to lose weight this year, you might want to think twice before you take the soda.

Speaking of added sugar, energy drinks are another big culprit when it comes to making your weight loss harder. While you may be tempted to take one for a mid-day energy boost, experts suggest skipping this one altogether.

“Energy drinks are packed with sugar, which will make it harder to burn fat and can also lead to weight gain,” says Janet Coleman, RD at The Consumer Mag. “Try to avoid consuming energy drinks if you want to reduce your chances of gaining weight.”

Staying hydrated is a fundamental part of being able to lose weight and gain muscle after training.

“Drinking water regularly helps your body recover and regulate its temperature,” says Michelle Hawksworth, RD for Muscle and Brawn. “When you are not hydrated, your body will not be able to function at its full potential during workouts.”

Hawksworth also cautions that juices and sports drinks during or after a workout can sometimes derail your goals due to the high added sugar content. So you’re probably better off drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
