A severe winter storm has left some motorists stranded for more than 24 hours this week as they traveled on Interstate 95 in eastern Virginia.

The storm dumped more than a foot of snow in the area between Richmond and Washington, DC, but much of the problem was that broken down trucks were blocking the path, transportation officials said. Many people, lacking food and water, abandoned their vehicles while they waited for traffic to resume. Others stayed inside, occasionally turning their engines on to warm up and then turning them off to save fuel.

The 80 km stretch of I-95 was finally reopened on Tuesday evening.
