Brian Cox has defended JK Rowling from what he sees as ‘deeply unjust’ treatment.

The Succession actor has hit out at so-called cancel culture and insisted the Harry Potter author has faced unfair backlash after she criticized an article in 2020 that referred to ‘people who menstruate’, rather than women, and went on to make several contentious statements about the trans community over the past couple of years despite denying she is transphobic.

Responding to the fierce criticism she has faced, Brian said: ‘I thought there was something deeply unjust about it. And I just felt that.

‘It is happening time and time again. It is not only the people who are cancelled. It is also people like their families, like their children, like their parents. It has such ramifications. It creates like an earthquake situation.’

Appearing on TalkTV’s Piers Morgan: Uncensored on Thursday evening, the 75-year-old star described cancel culture as ‘a kind of modern day McCarthyism’.

I have argued: ‘It is a kind of modern day McCarthyism really. It is a kind of raid on people’s sensibilities in order to reduce them and make them… I don’t know, there is so much hypocrisy in the whole thing.

‘I find the whole thing completely hypocritical. I am not religious but there is a thing in the Bible where it says, “Let he or she without sin cast the first stone”, and there seems to be a lot of casting of stones. And it is like a virus.’

And Brian agreed with outspoken host Piers when he described it as a form of fascism.

He replied: ‘It is total fascism. You are absolutely right. It is total fascism… You see, it’s hypocrisy again.

‘The hypocritical notion of “I am being liberal” but actually you are being fascist and people should just stop it and behave themselves.’

Harry Potter stars including Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe have criticized their comments in the past.

In 2020, Emma tweeted: ‘Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.’

While Daniel said in a statement: ‘Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people.’

Piers Morgan: Uncensored airs weekdays from 8pm on TalkTV.
