Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has put an end to rumors between Florian Wirtz and Manchester United, insisting the club are not considering selling the midfielder.

The 18-year-old has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most promising young players over the past 18 months – scoring 17 goals in 61 appearances – and is being compared to former Leverkusen prodigy Kai Havertz.

Wirtz’s exceptional performances have caught the attention of a multitude of top teams across Europe and Manchester United are said to have considered an offer for the teenager ahead of the January transfer window.

According to The Daily Star, the Red Devils believe interim manager Ralf Rangnick could give them the upper hand in the race for Wirtz’s signing given his reputation for developing young players in his native Germany.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been credited with a strong interest in Wirtz, but it looks like Europe’s top flight will have to look elsewhere for reinforcements this winter.

Asked about speculation surrounding Wirtz’s future, Leverkusen chief Voller told Bild: “Due to his contractual situation and the trust we have built in him and his family, we know he will be in good hands here for a few more years.

“At some point maybe that day will come and this club will be too small for Florian, like Kai Havertz.

“But it will still take some time. My wish is that Florian will stay with us for a few more years.

“It is important for us and for the whole Bundesliga and I think that is also his plan.”

Wirtz, who rose through the ranks of the Cologne academy before joining Leverkusen, is under a contract with the BayArena until 2026.

Speaking earlier this season, Wirtz’s father and agent Hans-Joachim Wirtz stressed that the youngster remains fully focused on Leverkusen and has no plans to leave anytime soon.

“Florian definitely wants to play a key role in Leverkusen over the next two years,” he told Bild.

“What comes after that, we don’t know yet. But for now, he is focusing only on Bayer and the national team.

Wirtz has already been selected four times internationally and Germany boss Hansi Flick recently described the dynamic Leverkusen attacking midfielder as “the complete package”.

“Florian is just a huge asset to this team with his carefree attitude,” Flick told reporters.

“He’s just an exceptional technician, he loves to play, he’s very creative, he has a good shot, he runs hard and he’s fast.

“It has it all and is the complete package. “
