Aston Villa vs Manchester United LIVE highlights and reaction as Coutinho scores on debut

Manchester United return to the Premier League on Saturday night when they take on Aston Villa, kicking off at 17:30 GMT.

United started the week with a win against the same opponents but know they will have to put in a much better performance if they are to come away with three points this weekend.

Ralf Rangnick’s side will be looking to bounce back from their league loss to Wolves two weeks ago and head into the game backed by an incredible record at Villa Park. United are unbeaten in their last 22 league away matches against Villa, the longest run without a win that a team has had against another in English Football League history.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford are not in the squad while Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay miss the game through suspension. Young Anthony Elanga starts.

United player ratings: Fernandes good but Sancho bad against Aston Villa

David De Gea

Made two routine saves from Emiliano Buendia and Lucas Digne in the first half and vigilantly denied Jacob Ramsey but his spot-kicks put United under pressure. seven

Diogo Dalot

A decent first half at right-back against forager Digne, who then grazed him early in the second and Villa constantly targeted Dalot. 4

Victor Lindeloff

An improvement on his rusty performance against Villa on Monday night, but he then wandered off for goals. 5

Raphael Varane

A class act again and almost flawless with their defense as United were up front but were then overwhelmed when Villa scored once, then twice. seven

That should seal the game

United capitalize on Villa’s waste at the back as Fernandes scores his second. Fernandes was never going to miss this, but it was not an easy finish, far from it. He was regressing in the game – losing the ball several times – but he scored that crucial second goal which should seal the game.

United need change here

It’s not unreasonable to suggest United consider a switch at this stage to gain more control. Their passage and their composure have completely abandoned them this half and Villa flavor the blood. United have been regressing for the last 10 minutes of the first half and Villa, dropped in the first 35 minutes, look more like proactive opponents at Old Trafford on Monday.

56′ – AVL 0-1 MUNSteven Railston

That’s all Villa now

United need calm here.

They need a possession spell.

54′ – AVL 0-1 MUNSteven Railston

LUCK!

Buendia from the edge of the box but it’s tame.

The villa looks dangerous

Villa started the second half as they finished the first – they look dangerous. The hosts have always promised to enjoy a spell in this game after Monday’s performance and they are now starting to ask United questions. United must stand tall and weather the storm.

It wouldn’t be a bad time to score a goal on the counterattack…

United fans react as Fernandes offered Martinez howler goal

Manchester United fans were once again treated to an early goal against Aston Villa, this time in fortunate circumstances.

The Villa defense and Emi Martinez were caught off guard by a United free-kick routine as Bruno Fernandes’ bubbly effort slipped through the goalkeeper’s hands and bounced off the line.

As Fernandes walked away to celebrate, Martinez and his teammates complained unsuccessfully to the referee, who opened the protests.

Andy Hinchcliffe, on commentary service for Sky Sports, described the goal as an “awful screamer”.
