Last week, Daily Sebastian had the opportunity to sit and speak with legendary singer and songwriter Arlo Guthrie and his wife Marti Ladd over lunch at Sebastian. The two tied the knot on December 8, 2021.

Guthrie has not been in the area since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2020, Guthrie announced his retirement as the sites closed, and he and Ladd remained on his farm in Massachusetts until November 2021.

I have stayed in contact with Guthrie throughout the pandemic and provided him with COVID case numbers to Sebastian. In addition, we often exchanged photos of the weather and discussed the current temperatures.

During our conversation with the Alice’s restaurant singer, I mentioned that I recently found out that his father, Woody Guthrie, knew Bob Dylan. Guthrie then gave me the story between the two.

In 1961, when Guthrie was 13, Dylan showed up at his home looking for his father, Woody. Guthrie said his father was in the hospital with a health issue, but a 19-year-old Dylan persisted.

“I was about 13 years old when a young Bob Dylan came to the house looking for my dad. He was standing outside the door with those great hiking or engineering boots, ”Guthrie said. Daily Sebastian.

Guthrie said his father was not at home and at a nearby hospital, but he still invited the 19-year-old inside. They played the harmonica together before Dylan left. Afterwards, Dylan visited Woody Guthrie in the hospital. Dylan and others were drawn to the center of the folk music world, Greenwich Village, a section of New York City famous for its nightclubs, bars, and cafes.

Young Guthrie was not of legal age to hang out in places where Dylan and others drank or courted, but being Woody Guthrie’s son had his privileges, and despite his youth he was able to be a part of performing, watching and listening to some of the great singers and musicians who started what was then called “The Folk Boom”.

Guthrie’s father was a famous songwriter, writing songs such as This land is your land, On the way to glory and Maid, to name a few.

During our chat, Guthrie said he always misses playing in front of people. He has been on the road for over fifty years and is now enjoying his retirement.

As many of you know, Guthrie has lived in the Sebastian area for decades. Ladd moved to the area in 2016 after selling his bed and breakfast called The Inn of the Wild Rose in Woodstock, New York.

We also enjoyed chatting with Ladd, as she is pleasant to be around. She is funny and quick-witted. Ladd is a great companion for Guthrie, and she helps him with some of his videos on Cameo.

If you don’t know what Cameo is, it allows celebrities and famous people to send birthdays or other greetings to people for a small fee. For example, you can hear Ladd helping with sound effects in a birthday message and sometimes showing a birthday cake. Check out Arlo Guthrie on Cameo.

Guthrie said he’s thinking of a new album, something he hasn’t done in over a decade. It’s a project he’s still thinking about, and we’ll keep you posted when more information becomes available.

Years ago, Guthrie gave Sebastian free concerts. You can watch this 2004 video of his performance in front of Riverview Park by the water.
